STATEMENT BY NES We Socialist Jews

We call for the suspension of diplomatic relations with the Vatican: stop those who fuel anti-Semitism.

We Socialist Jews express deep indignation at the Pontiff's recent statements and the Vatican's repeated attitude regarding the conflict in the Middle East. Once again, the Holy See has chosen to ignore the suffering of the Jewish people and the systematic violence exercised by Hamas, Hezbollah and Houthi against Israel, focusing exclusively on the defensive responses of the Jewish state.

We strongly condemn the Vatican's silence on the atrocities committed by Hamas, a terrorist organization that has been oppressing both Palestinians and Israelis for decades, using the civilian population as a human shield to carry out its agenda of hatred, violence and destruction. This silence on Hamas, which more than a year later still holds captive those kidnapped in the Oct. 7, 2023 pogrom, coupled with one-sided statements against Israel, accused of operating with cruelty, machine-gunning children, and committing genocide, not only distorts reality, but legitimizes a narrative that justifies terrorism and foments anti-Semitism on a global scale, fueling divisions that drive away any prospect of peace.

Also in this context is the recent statement by Israel's Foreign Ministry accusing the Pontiff of ignoring-in his annual Christmas address to the Vatican's cardinals-the cruelty of Hamas' political agenda and of using a double standard when condemning air strikes on Gaza.

Anti-Semitism is an ancient evil and must be countered.

We Socialist Jews urge the Israeli government to consider whether it should temporarily suspend diplomatic relations with the Vatican. This measure, while drastic, is necessary to send a strong signal to those who, even indirectly, fuel anti-Semitism and legitimize terrorism. Let the severing of relations be a call for the Vatican to retrace its steps, acknowledge the damage caused by its statements and apologize for the inappropriate and divisive positions it has taken.

We Socialist Jews reiterate that peace cannot be built by feeding old and new prejudices and hatred. Criticism must be based on truth, never on a distorted narrative that affects the right of the Jewish people to defend themselves and live in safety. Our commitment as NES is to support a just and lasting solution that recognizes the rights of all peoples involved: Jews, Palestinians and all communities affected by the conflict. We believe in a Middle East based on justice, where diverse peoples can live without barriers, oppression, exploitation and without prejudice.

We Socialist Jews conclude by relaunching our Appeal to transform the armed conflict into a cultural conflict and to promote a Permanent Negotiation that uses cultural diversity as a negotiating tool. Moreover, we believe it is also necessary to stop the interreligious dialogue between Jews and Christians and transform it into a genuine negotiation based on mutual respect, historical truth, and equal confrontation, which are the basis for genuine and lasting peace.
