HAMAS, SURRENDER!
Threaten by the realistic threat of an invasion of Gaza by the Israeli government, Hamas must surrender. And in the West countries, the Left parties have the duty to restore the allocation of responsibility to an organization that for twenty years has governed and terrorized the Strip with dictatorial, autocratic and intimidating methods, dragging into a downward spiral to the abyss its own people.
We recognize the validity of the appeal of PNA President Abu Mazen: Hamas must lay down its arms and immediately release all Israeli hostages. It is an essential step for any future of coexistence.
If the Left really wants to support the Palestinian cause without bending it to anti-Zionist, anti-Israeli or worse anti-Semitic logics, must break out all ambiguities. It must assume the political and moral responsibility of helping the Palestinians to build a credible patriotic front, free from dictatorship, capable of reactivating a national process and declaring it to the world: a process that, amid contradictions and failures, was started decades ago and that today seems to be erased from memory.
Once again, we NES express full solidarity with the Israeli Left, which represents a vital garrison of democracy, pluralism and determined criticism of the current government.
The European Left parties, on the contrary, propose a theoretical and abstract pacifism, which continues to ignore, if not support, the violence, threats and attacks of Hamas against Israel (and of Hezbollah, Houthis and the Iranian government, all of which are clearly anti-Jewish), and which ends up silencing Jewish voices, and denying even Jews' active participation in the debate on the future of Socialism and on the emerging and pandemic proliferation of extreme right-wing governments and formations.
If Hamas would surrender, they would do the right thing.
It is time for the Left parties to come of age, changing pace, recognizing the complexity and specificity of the Middle East conflict. It is not enough to accuse the Israeli Government, with which we do not identify, and which has made and is making many serious mistakes: we need the courage to denounce the oppression exercised by Hamas. We need a Left that guarantees the opposition ferments that, despite a thousand risks, is emerging in the Palestinian territories; a Left that knows how to recognize, respect and value Jewish and Islamic cultural diversity.
We Socialist Jews propose an innovative and far-sighted reading of the Abrahamic Pact: let it not only be a mercantilist agreement, but a fertile background for a cultural and spiritual alliance between Judaism and the Islamic world. In that context, the Palestinian revival will no longer be an ideological abstraction, but the concrete result of a process of emancipation and national construction, based on pluralism and self-determination.
The Left has the historical duty to start this process. To do so rigorously, without moralism and, above all, without ever using anti-Semitism and anti-Zionism as an instrument of political struggle.
The People's Peace Summit in Jerusalem begins today, to which we look with interest and hope.
On the occasion of the eightieth anniversary of Germany's surrender to the Allies (Reims, 7 May 1945; Berlin, 8-9 May 1945), we invite the Left parties to finally recognize in a declaration of surrender a political instrument of high responsibility.
